District outlines math curriculum changes and plan to move Algebra I to 8th grade

Morris described the state’s six‑year math adoption cycle and explained the district’s process: the state provides a vetted list of high‑quality instructional materials, publishers present samples and teachers volunteer for a K–12 adoption committee that reviews and rates materials using a rubric. The committee narrows choices to three publishers for a side‑by‑side comparison before a final recommendation.
The district plans to shift Algebra I to 8th grade beginning in the 2027–28 school year to provide students the opportunity to earn high‑school credit earlier, while phasing in changes and ensuring seventh‑grade curriculum is intentionally designed to prepare students for Algebra I. Morris stressed a staggered approach to avoid gaps in foundation skills and said K–5 math documents are being finalized and will be presented in July.
Board members asked clarifying questions about timing, credit, and supports; Morris said course mapping, common formative assessments and teacher involvement are central to the plan. The presentations were introductory; formal adoption actions will be scheduled for the next board meeting.
