City Manager Richard Newbern told the Cochran City Council on July 9 that the city has collected $6,473,806.96 in property taxes so far this year and has $282,128.33 outstanding.
Newbern said the city’s collection rate over the past seven years is 95.8 percent. He presented a collection timeline that calls for sending levy notices in August and holding a tax sale on Oct. 1 to pursue delinquent accounts. Newbern’s presentation included no vote but prompted discussion about the possible need for a special called meeting to further address tax-collection issues.
The report came against the backdrop of an adopted FY 2024–25 budget totaling $8,755,709, which City Manager Newbern cited during the update. The council did not take formal action on collections at the July 9 meeting; Mayor Billy Yeomans noted he may call a special meeting to discuss tax matters further.
Why it matters: The outstanding amount and the planned timeline indicate the city’s next administrative steps to collect delinquent taxes, which affect revenue available to support the adopted budget and programs.
Next steps: Levy notices will be sent in August and a tax sale is scheduled for Oct. 1. The council may hold a special called meeting to discuss collection strategy and any required follow-up measures.
