The Saugatuck City Council was briefed on a $250,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) under the Transportation Economic Development Fund Category B program to support the Maple Street Improvements Project. The project scope includes road and water-main replacement and stormwater improvements; staff also discussed options for adding a sidewalk or multi-use pathway in the corridor.
Staff emphasized that constructing a pathway within the Maple Street project area is expected to cost more than $1 million regardless of whether concrete or asphalt is used. The Council heard that the grant is a notable contribution but will cover only a portion of the anticipated project costs. Staff will prepare detailed cost estimates, evaluate options for materials and alignment, review allocations from the street and water funds, and explore general-fund availability. Officials also reported ongoing discussions with the township about possible cost sharing for the water-main replacement and road segment in question.
An open-house process is planned to gather public input ahead of the formal agenda review; Council members will receive an update on planning and funding strategy on Jan. 22. The resolution presented at the workshop sought approval to enter a contract (Contract No. 24-5489) with MDOT to accept the grant funding; no final adoption vote was recorded at the workshop.
