UPEA outlines sewer/lagoon grant as South Range public‑works staff detail heavy winter operations

Chris Holmes of UPEA attended the Feb. 1 South Range council meeting to discuss a Rural Development Grant opportunity for the village sewer and lagoon system. President George Eakin said the village has coordinated with OHM on grant submissions and that staff recently met with OHM to sign for a Lead Pipe Replacement Grant.
Street Commissioner Craig Burkman briefed the council on public‑works activity. He reported that a grader was damaged during plowing and was repaired with assistance from employee Brandon Skewes; a village 2020 Ford F‑250 had transmission repairs at Copper Country Ford. Crews responded to several water leaks in January, and staff (Don Cline, Craig Burkman and Dave Swetich) restored communications for the village water tank after intermittent problems. Burkman also said a hydrant on 7th Street is leaking and will remain shut for winter, and that crews plowed 14 consecutive days in January.
Clerk Kristen Archambeau reported that WUPHD (the local health department) will continue weekly lagoon testing and will expand testing to include COVID‑19, norovirus and RSV; she said the Village will be billed $55 per weekly test, up from $40 in prior years. The council did not take further formal action on the sewer grant or lagoon testing at this meeting; council members did note the Lead Pipe Replacement Grant paperwork and OHM involvement.
The meeting record also notes a snowmobile complaint forwarded to the sheriff’s department; the transcript states that 'Sheriff Saaranen' reached out to MDOT and will work with the Clerk on signage and resident contact.
