Residents and developers raise drainage, traffic and redevelopment plans at South Range meeting

Public comments at the Village of South Range’s May 2 meeting flagged local delivery and traffic concerns and outlined proposed development plans south of the village.
Resident Dave N. told the council that deliveries in Whealkate Estates are being disrupted by confusion between North and South addresses. Karla A. said the development around her home may change plans and increase traffic; she also offered her services as a grant writer to help the village pursue funds.
Chris H., representing UPEA, said he and the drain commissioner met with EGLE, President Eakin and Clerk Archambeau and reported that "EGLE still thinks the culverts should be removed from the drainage ditch." Chris H. said UPEA will prepare a new plan to submit to EGLE in June 2024.
Developer Marc F. described a plan for property south of the village, said he is pursuing an additional seven acres from the county with the primary entrance on Old M-26, and requested that the council prepare documentation explaining how a county land sale would benefit the village. Craig H. said he is purchasing the former Fred’s Auto Repair building, has had a structural inspection, has discussed potential borings with EGLE, and intends to operate a business at the lower level with apartments above.
Council members did not take formal action on the development proposals during the meeting. Clerical and staff follow-ups recorded in the minutes include easement paperwork signed by three residents to complete drainage work and a note that UPEA will submit a revised drainage plan to EGLE in June.
