South Range council approves MDOT contracts, personnel updates and backs $100,000 paving grant in 4-2 vote

Trustee Marier moved to approve the April 4, 2024 minutes, with Trustee Harkonen supporting; the motion passed on a roll call of all ayes. In a series of business motions later in the agenda, the council approved the MTU Hold Harmless Form (moved by Trustee Saaranen, supported by Trustee Parolini), amended employee handbook job descriptions (moved by Trustee Marier, supported by Trustee Korby), and authorized the internal posting of the Assistant Public Works position for two weeks with interviews and a final decision at the June 6 regular meeting (moved by Trustee Marier, supported by Trustee Korby). All of those motions passed with unanimous votes from members present.
On the paving grant question, Trustee Marier moved and Trustee Saaranen supported a motion to have UPEA apply for a $100,000 paving grant. The motion carried 4-2. Ayes: Trustee Saaranen, Trustee Marier, Trustee Korby and President Eakin. Nays: Trustee Harkonen and Trustee Parolini.
The council also approved a homeowner sidewalk removal request at 36 First Street, with the village maintaining the right-of-way; approved State Administrative Board and Performance Resolutions related to MDOT; and approved the State Trunkline Contract with MDOT. Each of those items passed on unanimous vote by members present.
Trustee Harkonen, supported by Trustee Saaranen, moved to dedicate a new flagpole at 45 Trimountain Avenue at 8:00 a.m. on July 4, 2024, to village veterans; that motion passed unanimously. With no further business, Trustee Harkonen moved to adjourn at 9:02 p.m., supported by Trustee Korby; the motion carried.
The council meeting record notes routine operational items elsewhere on the agenda, including public works equipment scheduling and expected delivery of a new loader in September, and Clerk Archambeau’s update that the council has until Dec. 31, 2024 to allocate ARPA funds. The council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for June 6, 2024, where the Assistant Public Works hire will be finalized.
