South Range council approves alley drainage contract, paving plan, CD renewal and stipends

The Village of South Range Council on June 13 approved several measures to maintain local infrastructure and village finances, voting unanimously on a set of motions that included an alley drainage contract, paving postings, a certificate-of-deposit renewal and payment of annual fireman stipends.

Trustee Marier moved and Trustee Parolini supported the council’s acceptance of the lowest bid from Portage Lake Construction for alley drainage work; the motion carried with all ayes. Trustee Marier also moved to authorize posting the areas recommended for paving as outlined by Street Commissioner Burkman; that motion likewise passed unanimously.

Trustee Saaranen moved, with support from Trustee Marier, to renew the Whealkate CD at Miners Bank at an 11-month special rate; the motion passed on a unanimous vote. Earlier in the meeting Trustee Marier moved, supported by Trustee Parolini, to approve payment of the village’s annual stipend to the South Range firemen; that motion also carried unanimously.

The council added the village’s 4th of July Committee to the municipal insurance policy after Trustee Saaranen’s motion, supported by Trustee Marier; the addition was approved by unanimous vote.

Street Commissioner Burkman briefed the council on public-works activity that underpin the measures: purchase of a trailer to move mowers, replacement of a water-tank probe, completed ditch and tree work, discharge of lagoons in May and other routine maintenance. Burkman’s report also noted ongoing preparation for lead-service work, including about 70 locates required by October 2024 and meter changes as needed.

No dissenting votes were recorded on the items above. The council adjourned at 8:19 p.m.
