The Board of Finance on Jan. 27 reviewed a briefing on the Board of Education’s proposed fiscal 2026–27 budget, which the briefing put at roughly $17 million, an increase of about 6.3% from the prior year. The presentation said the majority of that rise is attributable to contractual step increases and hiring additional special-education teachers and materials.
The increase would leave approximately 69% of the town’s budget tied to education spending, the briefing said, a proportion the Board of Finance flagged as central to upcoming discussions. Board members set a schedule of budget workshops, beginning Feb. 3, to review the BOE request alongside other departmental proposals.
The briefing noted the BOE budget will be finalized prior to Region 4 and individual elementary school budgets. Officials also discussed communication strategies to notify the public of meeting dates where the school budget will be debated and voted.
Board members asked staff to collect further detail on staffing and material cost drivers ahead of the workshops. The board did not take a final vote on the BOE budget during the meeting; next steps are the Feb. 3 workshop and additional reviews before any formal appropriation.
