Backpack program seeks volunteers; food pantry reports ample donations

At the Jan. 6 meeting the Deep River Community Health Committee discussed operations for its backpack and food pantry programs. Kelsey Sneed said the backpack program needs two people to assemble backpacks on weeks when two distributions occur; the committee agreed to revise the volunteer schedule to improve efficiency and will review the menu at its next meeting.
Sneed told members she is working with Dollar Tree in Old Saybrook to source menu items for the backpack packets. The committee said it may add two more students next month to the backpack program roster.
On the food pantry, members reported that the donation box at Adams has been full and donations have been generous. The committee agreed to place a sign-up sheet on the donation box to coordinate pickup and reminded volunteers to collect vegetables from the produce manager. Committee members described pantry stock as "looking very good."
