Danbury commission urges accessibility in downtown revitalization, updates transit and parking efforts

John Gentile, chairman of the Danbury Commission for Persons with disAbilities, told commissioners at their Jan. 14 meeting that recent Danbury News-Times coverage signals the city will restart its downtown revitalization project and that commission leaders have asked the mayor's office to send a representative to discuss accessibility needs.

The commission flagged sidewalk disrepair in the downtown area as a particular concern. Guest Isabel Domber urged the panel to ensure the revitalization includes "access and inclusion for Persons with disAbilities," and commissioners agreed to pursue that issue with the mayor's office and other city staff.

Commissioners also reviewed ongoing efforts on handicap parking enforcement. Commissioner John Neumuller said the issue has "the attention of the Police Department leadership as well as the officers in the Department," and the commission kept the item on its active list for follow-up.

On transportation, Gentile described a collaborative initiative with the Bridgeport Commission for Persons with disAbilities to address on-demand transit needs; he said he will extend invitations to Bridgeport's Thursday meetings to Danbury members to support a regional approach.

The commission noted it will prepare materials for an upcoming City Council quadrennial review of commissions and asked members to compile accomplishments — including parking work — for that review. The group set its next meeting for March 11, 2025.

The commission did not take formal votes on policy at the meeting and directed members and staff to follow up with the mayor's office and police on the listed access, enforcement and transportation items.
