The Guilford Board of Education announced it will hold a special meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 to identify reductions needed after the town Board of Finance cut $650,000 from the school budget the board had previously approved.
"The Board of Finance addressed their responsibility thoroughly and thoughtfully," Superintendent Dr. Freeman said, adding that the district must now determine how to absorb the reduction. He said the special meeting will be deliberative; members of the public may observe but there will be no public-comment period.
The superintendent said the board hopes to finalize reduction recommendations in time for publication ahead of the town meeting on April 1 and the referendum on April 8, so voters can consider the updated budget. The superintendent asked the board to be prepared with suggestions and recommendations at the Wednesday meeting.
Board members did not take public testimony at the March 10 session but were notified that the district will likely need to identify spending cuts or other adjustments to align with the Board of Finance reduction. No specific line-item decisions were made at the March 10 meeting; the board will deliberate and vote on reductions at the special session.
