Guilford board extends superintendent's contract, approves 2.5% raise and benefit change

The Guilford Board of Education voted on Aug. 12 to increase Superintendent Dr. Freeman's salary by 2.5% for the 2024'25 year, add $2,250 to his teacher-retirement contribution (bringing that contribution to $14,500), and include compensation for up to five unused sick days at retirement (contingent on retirement as the reason for termination). The board also voted to extend the superintendent's contract by one year, restoring the contract to a three-year term.
Board members said the adjustments followed the annual evaluation process and reflected strong performance balanced against sensitivity to the district's fiscal environment. "We have been very pleased with Dr. Freeman's performance over the last year," a board spokesperson said during the motion discussion.
In separate business the board appointed Ralph Brooks to fill the vacancy left by Christy Faulkner. Kristen outlined the interview process and recommended Brooks, noting his work at Yale School of Medicine and that he has two children in the district; the board approved the appointment.
Both the superintendent compensation package and the appointment motions passed by voice vote. Board members noted that two colleagues were not present but had participated in the evaluation and negotiation prior to the vote.
