Guilford Board moves forward on kindergarten entry-date change and reviews materials-selection policy

Policy 5114: The board discussed proposed revisions to the kindergarten entry-age policy to align with state requirements by changing the cutoff date for eligibility to Sept. 1. Under the draft language, a parent of a child who turns 5 between Sept. 2 and Dec. 31 may submit a written request to the building principal for the district to assess the child’s developmental readiness; the superintendent may notify the board to allow admission of such a child if assessment criteria are met. The item was received for consideration and is expected to return for a vote at the next meeting.
Policy 6334: The board reviewed recommended changes to the selection and reconsideration process for books and instructional materials. The proposed policy emphasizes inclusive selection, specifies that a person seeking reconsideration must complete a written request form, and states that challenged materials remain in use until due process is completed; the final decision rests with the Board of Education after professional staff review. Board members and the policy committee discussed the changes and were asked to submit further comments before the next vote.
Both items were discussed for several minutes and were provided to the board as "receive" items to be finalized and voted on at a subsequent meeting.
