Downtown Aberdeen Association highlights microgrants, events and volunteer investment

Will Russell and the Downtown Aberdeen Association presented a multi-part update to the council on downtown activity, microgrants, events and volunteer contributions.
Russell introduced DAA president Bobby McGracken and vice president Betty Worth and outlined downtown’s 32-block footprint, business turnover and the organization’s work to support local commerce. He said the association issued 24 microgrants across 2024–2025 with an aggregate payout reported at about $19,594 and highlighted specific storefront improvements the grants supported. Russell said the association invested roughly $24,576 back into downtown this year and reported cumulative volunteer hours since 2018 totaling tens of thousands of hours, which DAA estimated at about $993,734 in volunteer value and around $1.6 million in combined benefit since 2018.
DAA leaders described recurring events that drive foot traffic—Summerfest (including a regional barbecue competition), Winterfest, and the newly branded Red, White and Boom (downtown, July 4, 11 a.m.–4 p.m., with vendors, music and a fireworks display hosted by FiveStar). They also described downtown outreach efforts such as a monthly roundtable for business owners and a welcome packet for prospective business owners.
DAA asked council members to continue supporting downtown programs, to consider serving on or promoting volunteer activities, and to help publicize downtown businesses. The presentation concluded with an invitation to the council to attend DAA roundtable meetings and events.
