Aurelia City Council approves insurance renewal, sewer extension and schedules real-estate hearing

Aurelia Mayor Dennis Weathers called the March 17, 2025 regular council meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. The council approved its consent agenda, which included minutes, clerk and treasurer reports and bills payable.
Michael Pertzborn briefed the council on the city's insurance renewal, saying Aurelia received a dividend from EMC and that premiums are expected to rise by about 6.3 percent. Council Member Redig moved to approve the FY25/26 insurance renewal with Stille, Pierce & Pertzborn; Council Member Bruce seconded. All members present voted in favor and the motion carried.
Diane Weathers and Les Todd discussed decorative lighting for downtown Main Street and reported Aurelia Economic Development had received a $5,000 Legacy grant toward the project. The council tabled that item for presentation to the Utility Board.
Denny Weathers and Les Todd also raised costs and upkeep for proposed pickleball courts; the council tabled further action on the courts until its April meeting.
On infrastructure, Council Member Redig moved and Council Member Fassler seconded approval of a sewer main extension on Honeysuckle Lane. The motion passed on a unanimous vote.
The council received routine reports from Public Works, the Police Department, the City Clerk and the landfill; no formal action on those reports was recorded in the minutes.
Council Member Redig moved and Council Member Bruce seconded a motion to adopt Resolution 25-04, titled “Resolution Setting Time and Place for a Public Hearing to Sell Real Estate in Aurelia, Iowa.” The motion carried on a unanimous vote, formally scheduling a public hearing on a potential sale of city property.
Lifeguard applications were tabled for further consideration at a special council meeting scheduled March 24, 2025. The council voted to keep pool pricing for the 2025 season after a motion from Council Member Redig and a second from Council Member Bruce. Council Member Nelson moved to approve a family pool pass to be used for an Aurelia Daycare fundraiser; Council Member Johnson seconded. The vote on the family pass was recorded as four “aye” votes with Council Member Bruce listed as abstaining.
The meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
