Otis Council on Aging reviews outings, schedules potlucks and donates to rescue squad

The Otis Council on Aging board convened on May 12, 2025, with meeting proceedings opened by Kendra Rybacki at 2:00 p.m. The board read the April minutes and a motion to accept them was made and seconded, according to the minutes. Members confirmed upcoming events and discussed donor support and educational offerings.
Board members set the June "Out to Lunch" at the Knox Trail Inn for June 5 at noon and canceled the July outing because of the holiday. Kendra Rybacki noted the restaurant owner is undergoing health treatment and said the board wanted to support the local business. Diane Dyer reported the insurance document for trips has not yet been received.
The board reviewed attendance for planned trips: the Newport Playhouse remains low in attendance and Mike said he can fill the bus; the Neil Diamond show is full; and the "Noah" trip is filling up. The July board meeting was scheduled for July 14 and may require a date change tied to travel planning.
Social events for members were finalized: a May potluck on May 21 will feature Tommy T and the Black Velvet (a suggestion by Fred); a June 11 dessert social will include music by Doug Schmolze; and the annual barbecue is set for July 16 at noon, with Karen Yvon arranging a friend to cater sides at no charge and the board agreeing to reimburse food costs.
Members discussed recent outings and future holiday plans. Evelyn Loring reported the Maple Leaf lunch was enjoyable but parking was limited. The group discussed a veterans-day potluck and noted there will be no potluck in August. Kendra will collect information on the Grenock Country Club as a possible holiday-lunch venue.
Community supports and classes were also covered. The Cultural Council provided $60 toward plants for two planters the COA maintains; Karen and Kendra will purchase and plant those at Otis Ridge. A first aid refresher for seniors is scheduled for June 23 at 11:30 a.m. Jane Bernasconi noted her daughter Chrissy will present a stroke awareness session on May 19 at 1:00 p.m., and the board said it is trying to schedule an Alzheimer’s awareness class in August.
The board acknowledged several donations and fundraising items: Carol Lomardo donated a chair and a thank-you will be sent; Maggie Storey donated soda and iced tea; the soda jar (50-cent charge) currently holds $10. The board reported $80 set aside to donate to the Otis Rescue Squad in memory of Russell Loring. Karen Yvon will arrange for the sheriff’s department to present a scam-and-fraud event for members.
The meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m. The next meeting is set for June 9, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
