Granby officials report surge in school-choice applications; district to review open seats

District administrators reported an increase in school-choice interest at the April 28 Granby School Committee meeting, saying 49 applications have been received to date for 32 proposed seats.
Of the 49 applicants, administrators said 35 are from South Hadley, five from Chicopee, six from Holyoke, four from Amherst, one from Palmer and one from Springfield. The committee heard that some students who chose South Hadley previously want to return to Granby.
Officials cautioned that applications do not equal committed enrollments: the district will not know final seat acceptances until it begins pulling students in June. “We often find people are shopping; we won’t know until we start pulling in June,” an administrator said.
The committee discussed whether to adjust proposed open-seat counts by grade. The superintendent and principals will review high-school grades in particular; the transcript records two proposed spots for grade 12 and no applicants from returning Granby seniors for those spots. Members said they will revisit seat openings if demand continues to grow and will bring any formal changes back to the committee for a vote.
Committee members asked staff to monitor South Hadley enrollment patterns and to consider modest tweaks to grade-level openings where enrollment pressure warrants. The committee did not take any formal action to change seat counts at this meeting.
