Granby superintendent seeks $200,000 earmark for Chromebooks; committee watches cellphone bill S3233

In her superintendent’s report on April 7 the Superintendent told the committee the district submitted an earmark request to a state senator’s office seeking roughly $200,000 to replace aging Chromebooks.
The Superintendent said last year the district secured $75,000 for a computer lab and that any additional funding would help address aging devices and reduce short-term pressure on the operating budget. "If we don't get $200,000, that's fine — whatever we can get, it'll be great," the Superintendent said.
The Superintendent also flagged pending state policy: she said the Massachusetts Senate passed legislation that would require districts to prohibit student cell-phone use during the school day and that the House would consider bill S3233. If enacted, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education would work with districts to create model policy language to be adopted by fall 2026. The Superintendent said the change may not be large for Granby but could prompt funding requests (for example, secure storage or 'yonder' bags) in districts that do not already restrict phones.
The committee took no vote on either item; staff will report back as the earmark and state action develop.
