Granby district wins $26,000 state grant to revise seclusion and timeout practices

Mayor Jane told the Granby School Committee on Feb. 24 that the district received a $26,000 grant from the state board of education to help implement changes to how the district uses seclusion and timeout for students with disabilities.
The grant will fund an additional staff position through Sept. 2026 to help develop behavior-support strategies and provide teachers and paraprofessionals with tools to reduce reliance on seclusion and timeout. "We received a grant for $26,000 ... to hire additional person from now till September to help us work with students with disabilities and behavior programs," Mayor Jane said.
District leaders framed the award as a time-limited opportunity to build capacity; they said ongoing continuation of the position would depend on the FY27 budget outcome. Mayor Jane said the district will post follow-up materials to families after the planned reunification drill and coordinate next steps with the wellness committee and special-education staff.
The committee did not vote on grant-specific spending at the meeting; members discussed using the funds for staff support and training. The district expects to report back on implementation and whether the position will be sustained beyond the grant period when budget decisions are finalized in the spring.
Next steps include aligning the grant-funded role with the wellness and special-education teams and updating families after the March drills and training sessions.
