Shive Hattery engineers presented results of a traffic engineering and safety study for Highway 2 and the Corydon Square at the Oct. 23 Corydon City Council meeting, recommending added signage, a reconfiguration of Hwy 2, curb extensions and marked crosswalks to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety.
The recommendation, presented by Kent Ellis and Jack Gibson of Shive Hattery, emphasized design changes intended to slow traffic and clarify pedestrian crossings in the square. The consultants said multiple funding sources may be available to offset construction costs; the council agreed to meet in a work session to review the study and the firm’s recommendations in greater detail.
The study’s proposals are intended to address recurring safety concerns at the square and along Hwy 2, where the report noted conflicts between through traffic and pedestrians accessing downtown businesses. The council did not vote on any design changes at the meeting and instead scheduled staff and council time to examine costs, possible grant or public-works funding options, and implementation timing.
Nancy Buss, the city’s engineering contact who coordinated review of the report with the consultants, outlined that the next step is a council work session to prioritize recommendations and identify funding pathways. No construction schedule or cost estimate that would trigger an immediate contract award was approved during the meeting.
The council’s follow-up work session will determine which recommended elements—signage, lane reconfiguration, curb extensions or crosswalk markings—will move forward to detailed engineering and public outreach.
