Corydon council approves Old Settlers street closures, fire department thermal drone and sewer proposal; denies extra time for long‑standing nuisance building

The Corydon City Council on July 24 approved a set of routine and event measures and took action on several property‑maintenance issues.
Mayor Nathan Bennett convened the meeting at 5:30 p.m.; Councilors Dawn Christian, Chase Clark, Kyle Hampton and Kenny Holmes were present. The council unanimously approved a revision to the agenda, moved by Councilor Dawn Christian and seconded by Councilor Kenny Holmes.
The most immediate decision cleared the way for the city’s Old Settlers celebration: Tierra Shields asked the council to close Jackson Street (from City Hall to Dekalb Street), Franklin Street (from the alley at Corydon State Bank to Highway 2) and the streets around the square for the parade and related activities. The council approved the closures on a motion by Kenny Holmes, seconded by Chase Clark. Shields told the council that El Vago plans to operate a beer tent during the event.
Public safety and infrastructure actions followed. The council approved purchase of a $6,500 thermal drone for the Corydon Fire Department, to be paid from donations and auxiliary funds; Chief Josh Cobb said the vendor will replace the drone twice as part of the unit’s warranty arrangement. The council also approved Resolution 2025‑003, authorizing staff to solicit proposals for a five‑year maintenance agreement to clean and televise roughly 9,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer annually.
On waste management, the council voted to permit licensed septic contractors to dump sanitary waste at the city lagoon, provided contractors present a current Iowa Department of Natural Resources license. City Clerk Stacy Gibbs said staff will create an input location, a permit process and a fee structure; proposed fees will be presented at the council’s Aug. 14 meeting.
The council addressed several nuisance properties. Don and Tammy Johnson asked for more time to abate a nuisance at 223 E. State Street, saying two potential buyers are interested and would need time for demolition; the council said it would add a formal agenda item on that request at the next meeting. Separately, the council denied a request for additional time from the owner of a long‑troubled building on Highway 2, citing years of inaction; the denial motion was made by Dawn Christian and seconded by Chase Clark.
