The Westborough Select Board changed the charge of the Active Transportation & Safety Committee (ATSC), clarifying that ATSC is an advisory committee appointed by and reporting to the Select Board rather than to the independently elected Planning Board.
Board members and committee leaders worked through edits to define responsibilities, including support for grant applications, plan review and community engagement when given Select Board approval. The revision also clarifies that ATSC should receive timely project notices and be included in planning conversations so its recommendations can reach the Select Board before decisions are finalized.
Board members said the move does not sever practical ties with planning staff: the assistant town planner will continue to provide information and coordination as needed, but the committee's formal charge now aligns directly under the Select Board. Several Select Board members praised the update as a "refresh and restart" to make the committee more effective and to ensure the board hears its recommendations on transportation projects.
The board voted 4-0 to approve the amended mission; staff will produce a clean final document for the town website and the committee will follow up on next steps for outreach and project coordination.
