Otis Street corridor work to add signal, shared-use path; major construction expected late July

Public Works Director Chris Bant reported the Otis Street corridor project will add pedestrian improvements, a Target-entrance signal and a 10-foot shared-use path along the west side; utility relocation and other preliminary work are underway with major construction activity slated to begin at the southern end by late July and signal installation likely next spring.
The Westborough Select Board received an update on the Otis Street corridor project from Public Works Director Chris Bant, who described the project scope, phasing and anticipated schedule.
Bant said the project will install pedestrian improvements and traffic changes at the Route 9/Otis Street intersection similar to recent upgrades at Lyman Street, build a 10-foot shared-use path on the corridor's west side extending from the Arrive apartments south to about 50 Otis Street, and add a traffic signal at the Target entrance. Early work (pole relocations, tree trimming, erosion control and underground boring) is underway; larger visible construction equipment is expected by the end of July when crews will start at the Hakumaka end and progress north.
Bant said signal installation at the Route 9 intersection is likely next spring and that the overall project is expected to finish the following summer. Board members asked about traffic spillover to smaller neighborhood streets and asked for enforcement attention on Fisher and Art Streets. Bant said DPW and police monitor side-street impacts and that project notices can be distributed via town newsletters and social-media channels to subscribers.
Bant confirmed that crosswalks will be added on all four corners at the Route 9 intersection and described a modest widening near Route 9 to accommodate an additional turn lane to reduce congestion. The board thanked Bant and had no motion on the update; timing and impact notifications will continue as construction approaches.
