Dunlap council approves pickleball court, July street closures and seasonal hires

The Dunlap City Council on May 14, 2025 approved a series of routine and park-related measures, including the location for a new pickleball court, street closures for July 4 and seasonal hiring of lifeguards.
Mayor Jason Knickman called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. and the council moved quickly through consent business. Councilmember Mike Gunia moved to approve the meeting agenda; Councilmember Wingrove seconded and the motion carried. The council also approved the April 9 minutes and payment of bills by separate unanimous voice votes.
Girl Scout Sophia Malone gave an update on the community garden and asked whether the city would allow the annual "Paws in the Pool" event again this year. Joyce Cogdill provided the Fire Department update, and Chief Miller delivered the Police Department report; the minutes record those presentations but do not provide additional detail.
Jill Schaben of DCDC updated the council on local projects. After that presentation, the council approved the proposed pickleball court location on a motion from Councilmember Mike Gunia, seconded by Councilmember Murphy. The council also approved street closures for July 4 on Iowa Avenue and at the park after a motion from Councilmember Wingrove and a second from Councilmember Bonsall.
Library representative Paula Evans presented the library report. Councilmember Wingrove moved and Councilmember Bonsall seconded a motion to hire lifeguards for the season; the council approved the hire. Councilmember Mike Gunia also raised concerns about speeding and through traffic near the athletic fields, urging attention to traffic safety. Councilmember Schauer spoke about forming a housing task force; no formal motion to create a task force is recorded in the minutes.
The council approved installing a shade structure at the Youth Complex after a motion from Councilmember Mike Gunia and a second from Councilmember Wingrove. Mayor Knickman asked members to inspect a tree stump at 8th and Montague prior to the next meeting. The session adjourned at 8:07 p.m. following a motion to adjourn.
