Dike council debates updated snow-emergency parking rules, tables ordinance for more review

The Dike City Council discussed a proposed update to the city’s snow-emergency parking ordinance on Jan. 14 that would expand and modernize how the city declares and notifies the public of snow emergencies.
The draft gives the mayor or the mayor’s designee authority to declare a snow emergency based on falling precipitation or forecasts, requires that parking be prohibited for a minimum of 48 hours once a snow emergency takes effect, and establishes notice requirements that include posting on the city’s social media page and contacting local television stations for public service announcements. The draft also describes towing procedures for vehicles remaining in violation more than 48 hours after a citation and includes a fines schedule (Section 5.2.15) that sets fines at $10 for a first offense, $15 for a second, and $25 for a third or subsequent offense within the calendar year.
After reviewing the draft’s provisions, Councilmember Camarata moved to table the snow-emergency ordinance for further consideration; Mikkelsen seconded the motion and the council voted unanimously to table the item until a future meeting.
No formal changes to the ordinance text were adopted at the Jan. 14 meeting; council members indicated they wanted additional review before taking final action.
