Dexter placed on state drinking-water fundable list; ISG estimates $113,000 for design work on $2.6M project

The Dexter City Council heard that the city has been placed on the State’s Fundable Range list for the Drinking Water Revolving Fund Intended Use Plan, potentially making Dexter eligible for low-interest financing for a drinking-water project.
Bryan Petzel, representing engineering firm ISG, told the council the feasibility study done earlier this year supports work to add and replace watermains and other improvements. Petzel said placement on the Fundable Range list could enable low-interest funding of about 2 percent, but the city was unlikely to receive grant funds. He said the city must hire ISG to prepare plans and specifications to pursue the funding; ISG estimated the cost to produce those documents at approximately $113,000 for a project with an estimated construction value of $2.6 million.
Council members discussed whether to move forward with full watermain upgrades or to refurbish the existing water tower; Petzel said either option would aim to provide quality drinking water, increase water-main pressure throughout town and allow for growth. Because there is an upcoming deadline to submit plans and specifications to the State for the funding list, council asked Petzel to delay seeking a commitment until the January council meeting to allow more time for consideration; Petzel agreed to wait.
No formal commitment or contract award for design work was made at the meeting; council will revisit the decision in January.
