Mahtomedi seeks turnback of Highway 244 segment; Dellwood requests more information

Mahtomedi's city engineer, John Sacci, appeared remotely July 9 to describe a proposed turnback of Highway 244 ownership from Minnesota Department of Transportation to the City of Mahtomedi, including the stretch of right-of-way that lies inside Dellwood. Sacci said Mahtomedi needs ownership of the right-of-way to obtain available funding to construct significant improvements.
Dellwood council members asked questions and determined they needed additional information before taking action. The council instructed City Attorney Richard W. Copeland to work with Mahtomedi's attorney to determine what, if any, action Dellwood must take and to report to the council prior to the August meeting.
Sacci emphasized that Dellwood would not incur expense for the project, that private properties within Dellwood would not be assessed now or in the future, and that Mahtomedi would be responsible for acquisition and ongoing upkeep and maintenance of the transferred segment. He also noted that the state currently owns the Highway 244 right-of-way and that nine homes in Dellwood lie adjacent to the affected right-of-way. The council did not vote to transfer any ownership; it requested more details to inform a future decision.
