Dawson to repair failing pump after $19,000 quote; permanganate system installation may be delayed

Dawson public works staff reported a significant maintenance need at the city water system during the May 5 council meeting.
Public Works Superintendent Kurt Collins told council members that a routine check discovered a pump with a damaged motor and fins and that the city has received a repair quote of $19,000. Collins said the city’s pumps are on a seven-year rotation but that the schedule may need to be accelerated because of this failure.
City Manager Tyler Franzky said the repair is an unexpected expense that could affect other water projects; he told the council that the planned permanganate system at the water plant may be delayed by about a year unless the city spreads payments with the contractor Bituminous. Franzky also reported that Bituminous and Bargan have been in town measuring for this year’s seal-coating project, which had been budgeted for 2026.
Collins reported other operational tasks under way: Voss Plumbing was installing backflow preventors in Gnome Park, pool and campground water should be turned on during the week, potholes near Livestock Systems were filled and the memorial fountain in Veteran’s Park was restarted. Collins said tree cutting and some seasonal work remain pending because of limited staff.
Council did not take a separate formal vote on the pump repair at the meeting; staff reported the quote and next steps so council could track budgetary impacts ahead of summer operations.
