Dawson council approves new phone system, reallocates liquor-store funds for pool repairs and votes to fly 1983 Minnesota flag

The Dawson City Council on May 5 approved three notable measures affecting city operations and recreation funding.

Council moved forward with a LeapForward internet-phone system after reviewing a quote with an upfront cost of $5,900; council members noted that neighboring entities use the same vendor. Councilman Dean Petersen moved to purchase the system, Councilman David Hansen seconded, and councilmembers voted unanimously in favor (Adelman, Olson, Hansen, Petersen and Bothun; Councilmember Stafford was absent). The city noted the vendor’s claim that the upfront cost would be recovered in savings after roughly eight months and that the city would not be locked into a long-term contract.

Council also approved a recommendation from the Recreation & Growth committee to apply liquor-store funds to pool repairs and equipment. Councilman David Hansen moved to zero out the liquor-store checking account first and then draw remaining needed funds from the liquor-store investment account; Councilman Jake Bothun seconded. The motion passed with Adelman, Petersen, Olson, Bothun and Hansen voting in favor. Councilmembers discussed pursuing donations for resurfacing, a new vacuum and a pool heater; if additional donations arrive, the money could be returned to liquor-store reserves.

On a separate vote, the council approved flying the 1983 Minnesota state flag. Councilman Hansen moved to proceed and Councilman Petersen seconded. The motion passed 4–1, with Councilman Vince Adelman voting no and Councilmember Stafford absent.

The council took the actions during its regular meeting at Dawson City Hall. The next council meeting is scheduled for May 19 at 5:30 p.m.
