The New Milford Board of Education took several governance and curriculum actions on June 17.
Policy: The board approved new Policy 1340 (Naming or Renaming School Buildings, Components of School Buildings and/or School Grounds) on second read and approved revisions to Policy 1111 (School Security and Safety) and Policy 1250 (Visitors and Observations in Schools). Dr. Janet Parlato described the restorative practices policy (5130) on first read as ‘‘reintegration back into the school community,’’ explaining it covers a continuum from brief conversations to more serious discipline interventions; the board said it will review a climate plan before the July meeting. The board also voted to delete older policies 4116 (Increasing Educator Diversity Plan and Minority Hiring Recruitment Plan) and 5131.911 (Bullying Prevention and Intervention and Safe School Climate Plan) and their administrative regulations.
Curricula: The board approved a broad package of new and revised courses across Art, Social Studies, English, Mathematics, World Languages, STEM, Library Media and Early College Experiences, including AP English Literature and a slate of new or updated honors and CP courses.
Votes on policy revisions, deletions and the curricular slate passed unanimously.
