Eden Valley-Watkins board invites five candidates for superintendent first-round interviews

The Eden Valley-Watkins Board of Trustees voted unanimously Jan. 29 to invite five candidates for first-round interviews for the district’s superintendent vacancy.
Board Chair Jay Brovold called the special meeting to order at 6:04 p.m. and introduced Barb Dorn of MSBA, who provided the board with materials and protocols for conducting the first-round interviews and reminded members about confidentiality and interview procedures.
On a motion by board member Ben Stommes, seconded by board member Jen Evens, the board approved invitations to five applicants identified in the minutes as candidates B, G, J, K and Q; the motion carried unanimously. The five individuals publicly announced by MSBA representative Barb Dorn were Joel Baumgarten (Superintendent, BLHS), Judd Wheatley (Secondary Principal, MCCRAY), Trish Perry (Superintendent, Foley), Jason Michels (Secondary Principal, Litchfield) and Jason Mielke (Secondary Principal, Albany). The minutes note the announced order did not match the sequence of the board’s selections.
Barb Dorn said she will contact the invited candidates with interview invitations and finalize the interview schedule; the minutes state the board had earlier referenced Feb. 1 for first-round interviews and later note that candidates will be invited for interviews on Feb. 2. Dorn also said a news release will be sent to Tracey to post on the district website.
The meeting adjourned at 7:12 p.m. on a motion by Stommes, seconded by Christina DeRose; that motion also carried unanimously. The board did not record additional discussion about candidate selection in the minutes. Next steps recorded in the minutes are candidate contact and schedule finalization by MSBA.
