Echo fire chief flags equipment failure, urges training changes to boost recruitment

Fire Chief Matt Dunphy told the Echo City Council on April 8 that the department is experiencing problems with the Jaws of Life rescue tool and will send the device to the cooperative for inspection and repair.

Dunphy said Echo firefighters will take part in a controlled grassland burn run by neighboring Belview to gain hands-on training. He described a desire to adjust training expectations, saying the department would like to “scale back on training for firefighters to possibly help recruit more members” and that alternatives to the Firefighter I & II pathway could still provide sufficient skills for volunteers to assist the department.

The chief identified equipment availability and training burden as two recruitment challenges. He did not propose specific alternative curricula at the meeting and did not state any budgetary changes; council members did not take formal action on the training proposal during the session.
