Ely Dog Park group proposes tree plantings, signage relocation and parking fixes; board refers tree plan to Tree Board

Bruce Wheelright, representing the Ely Dog Park, presented a map of potential planting locations and other site improvements to the Ely City Park and Recreation Board on April 8. He identified several spots around the fenced dog park for maple and birch trees, proposed moving the park’s “Bone” sign to improve visibility from the roadway, and outlined plans to add picnic tables just outside the fenced area.

The dog-park representative also asked the board to consider additional grading on the far northeast side of the parking lot to gain more spaces for dog-park visitors and recreational-trail users, and to address ongoing drainage issues in the park’s southeast corner. Council Rep Adam Bisbee suggested placing trees so they do not overcrowd fences and impede growth. Planning and Zoning Administrator Scott Kochendorfer said he would consult city staff about “blading” the parking area and look into drainage solutions.

The board voted to refer the submitted tree plan to the City Tree Board for review. Council Rep Adam Bisbee made the motion; Alyssa Richards seconded and the motion carried without objection. No vote tallies were recorded in the minutes.

The presentation included a request for directional signage near Highway 1; Wheelright said the group will coordinate with MnDOT, city staff and a local property owner to place wayfinding signs directing people down Old Airport Road. Kochendorfer also noted staff will follow up on the parking and drainage items.

The Park & Rec Board’s action was limited to forwarding the tree plan for Tree Board consideration; further decisions about planting, parking work, or signage placement will depend on Tree Board feedback and staff follow-up. The item will return to the committee or appropriate boards as next steps are completed.
