Public works outlines lead service-line study, GPS mapping costs and shop repairs

Public Works Supervisor Bryan Nielsen told the council March 10 that Bollig Engineering has re-engaged for Lead Service Line Replacement phase 2 to identify the material types for about 15 unknown service lines; Nielsen said this work will be provided at no cost to the city. He also said that curb stops, shutoffs, street valves, hydrants and hydrant shutoffs have been GPS-marked and that a software vendor can provide locating capabilities accurate to roughly six inches for an annual fee of about $570. Equipment to run the system — including a collector and tablet — would cost about $3,750; Nielsen mentioned the possibility of a state OSHA 50/50 grant to help with costs.
Nielsen noted the old gas station property is slated for demolition sometime this year and that abandoned utility lines will be marked. Council discussion also addressed city shop conditions: Councilman Wyatt Bendix reported the shop office lacks adequate heat and that dust from the dirt floor enters the office and equipment. Bendix recommended installing an electric wall-mounted heater and adding crushed granite or pouring concrete in part of the shop; Nielsen will obtain price estimates for cement, a heater and crushed granite.
