Echo council approves jackets for first responders; maintenance reports lift-station generator fire

At its Jan. 14 meeting, the Echo City Council heard from First Responders Chief Chastity Kuehn and Public Works Supervisor Bryan Nielsen about equipment, training and a maintenance incident affecting the wastewater lift station.
Kuehn reported that an ordered piece of equipment did not fit the blood-pressure machine and that she will return the incorrect items and source alternatives. She told the council that Taneka Olson has begun training classes that are covered by a grant, so there is no cost to the city for that training. Kuehn said she would like jackets for three new responders; Councilman Mark Schettler moved to order the jackets, Councilman Wyatt Bendix seconded, and the motion carried unanimously. Kuehn said responders will perform lift assists when needed and do not charge for services but often receive donations.
Maintenance Supervisor Bryan Nielsen told the council that a plow with bent hinges has been repaired. He also reported a fire on the lift-station generator, said he is working with the equipment company to determine the cause and will forward findings to insurance. Nielsen noted planned absences (Jan. 25-29) and that he will attend a wastewater conference March 3-6. Councilman Wyatt Bendix asked the supervisor to research purchasing a generator for the community center, to have the city well inspected for emergency use and to provide cost estimates for yard lighting at the campground; Nielsen agreed to obtain pricing and contact appropriate vendors.
The council did not take further action on the reported generator issue during the meeting; staff follow-up and vendor findings will determine any repairs or insurance claims.
