Neighbors press council over neglected lot; council orders mowing and will assess costs

A resident told the Echo City Council on July 9 that a neighboring property has accumulated junk, car tires and tall grass. The council directed the clerk to investigate ownership — the clerk said the lot may have forfeited to the state — and to send a letter to the occupant asking that the yard be cleaned up.
During old business the council instructed Public Work Supervisor Bryan Nielsen to mow an abandoned property that had not been maintained and said the cost will be assessed to the property owner’s taxes. At an earlier meeting council members had discussed a resolution that would have imposed fines for ordinance violations; council members decided at this meeting not to pursue that fines option for now.
Resident Gail Pederson raised the initial complaint during the open forum; Clerk Brian Pitzl told the council he would check property records and notify residents. The council’s direction to mow and assess costs is a standard enforcement step when property ownership and maintenance remain unresolved, and the minutes note the city will proceed with mowing and then place the expense on the property tax roll.
