Volunteer firefighter cleared to return; chiefs outline equipment needs

The Echo City Council voted July 9 to accept medical clearance letters for volunteer firefighter Russ Hennen, allowing him to return to active duty with the Fire Department.
The clearance was presented during the open forum by Hennen, and Councilman Darren Gjerset moved to accept the letters; Mayor James Busack seconded the motion and it carried with Councilman Larsen absent.
Fire Chief Matt Dunphy briefed the council on departmental needs. He said new gloves were ordered for working with the Jaws of Life and reported that the tanker truck requires new lids at about $400 apiece. Chief Dunphy also said one of the department’s trucks is surging at idle and that he will take it to Wood Lake for diagnostic work. He added the department was approached about conducting a burn for training at the old Rock Valley Store but that “a few issues” must be addressed before that can proceed. The department’s Pork Chop Feed fundraiser is scheduled for Aug. 25.
First Responders Chief Chastity Kuehn told the council that the ordered stair chair has been delivered and fits in the First Responders’ rig. She said the First Responders will hold a brat/hot dog feed during Echo Days to raise money for truck supplies.
The council did not vote on equipment purchases at the meeting; Chief Dunphy said he will follow up on the tanker truck and the feasibility of a training burn. The accepted medical clearance restores Hennen’s status to active duty pending any further departmental requirements.
