Ely council approves claims, utility dues and consents; reschedules February meeting

At its Jan. 6 meeting the Ely City Council approved a range of routine consent and committee items, including claims for payment and several utilities and organizational dues.
The council approved City and Ely Utilities Commission (EUC) claims for $1,146,965.81 and authorized 2026 membership dues: League of Minnesota Cities ($4,495), Minnesota Mayors Association ($30), and Range Association of Municipalities and Schools ($864). The council also approved an EUC $425 associate membership fee to the Minnesota Rural Water Association, $8,499 for MN Municipal Utilities Association dues, a $1,000 payment to Mick Shusta for operator services, and a $35 energy rebate for Derounian/Hardwicke at 137 E Boundary St. The consent agenda included waiving full ordinance/resolution readings and a call for sealed bids for the 2026 legal newspaper; the Feb. 3 council meeting was rescheduled to Feb. 10 due to caucuses. Motions were recorded as carried 6-0-1 with Debeltz absent unless otherwise noted.
The council also approved the list of 2026 official city depositories (Frandsen Bank & Trust, Highland Bank, and 4M Fund); that vote recorded Mayor Omerza as abstaining and carried 5-0-1-1.
