Magie Drive subdivision plans pause pending Brownfield study options, staff says

At the April 16 meeting, Planning and Zoning Administrator Kochendorfer reported that Ely City was not approved for Brownfield Study funding but is exploring other opportunities, including combining currently funded projects with a Brownfield study and seeking EPA or other grants.
Kochendorfer said it is currently unknown whether properties in the Magie Drive subdivision area are contaminated. He recommended an environmental review beginning with a Phase I assessment and, if warranted, a Phase II investigation before any redevelopment or sale proceeds. The commission discussed assessing contamination risk as a prerequisite to land acquisition or development decisions.
No funding source was finalized at the meeting; staff will investigate grant options and report back with potential funding strategies and the results of any Phase I work.
