Troy City Council voted to approve a bid waiver and lease agreement for GPS systems on city-owned golf carts at Sylvan Glen and Sanctuary Lake golf courses.
Assistant Recreation Director Allison Leach told the council staff recommends a 48-month lease with Reach Golfers (Scottsdale, Ariz.) at $25 per month per cart, financed through Alliance Funding Group, and estimated $51,000 per year for the two courses plus a one-time shipping fee of $1,250 per course.
Council members asked how the system would affect pace of play and player experience. Trent Altieri, general manager at Sylvan Glen, said GPS units allow staff and golfers to monitor group spacing, locate hazards and geofence sensitive turf areas, which helps both safety and course maintenance. Altieri and recreation staff said the system can reduce bottlenecks, give first-time players navigation, and allow staff to detect and respond to logjams before they frustrate players.
Councilmember Chamberlain moved the I4 resolution; the motion passed by roll-call vote. Staff said installation could start as soon as the end of July after geofencing and a short mapping/installation window; vendors will coordinate install schedules to minimize disruption.
What happens next: staff will finalize contract details and schedule geofencing and mapping work with the vendor and course staff.
