Votes at a glance: Merrill council approves street closure, multiple temporary Class B licenses and a premises extension

The Merrill Common Council approved a series of routine permits and licenses during its May 26 special meeting, voting by voice on each item.

The council approved a street use permit for the Golden Harvest Market to close Pearl Street between Main Street and Thielman Street on June 6 for a customer appreciation event. A motion to approve was made, seconded, and recorded as carried by voice vote.

Council members also approved temporary Class B beer licenses for the following organizations and dates:

- Merrill Youth Hardball Association (DBA Merrill Baseball Association): May 29–31, 8 a.m.–9 p.m., at Athletic Park, Utz Park and Lions Park (NBA youth tournament).

- Merrill Youth Softball Association (Merrill Fastpitch, "MySA"): multiple dates in June–August at Athletic Park in conjunction with Merrill Fastpitch Tournament and Legion Games.

- MHS Baseball Boosters Incorporated: multiple dates in June and July at Athletic Park for Legion, Junior Legion, Rangers and Babe Ruth events.

The council also approved an extension of premises for Valleyhoo's on May 30, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. for a block party; the record notes this was in addition to a previously approved street use permit.

Each item was introduced by the clerk, motions were made and seconded, and the council approved the items by voice vote. The chair closed the meeting after a motion to adjourn passed by voice vote.

Why it matters: These approvals permit scheduled community events and youth tournaments and allow a local business to expand service area temporarily; city staff had reviewed items at an earlier health and safety meeting.
