Deephaven Council declines additional Rotary fireworks payment; contribution amount noted

Council considered a request tied to the Excelsior Rotary’s July 4 fireworks display during its May 4 meeting. Staff presented a proposed Deephaven contribution amount of $3,094.35 calculated under the Joint Powers Agreement formula and noted the Rotary had not provided documentation for the stated funding shortfall and had not begun fundraising.
Mayor Kent Carlson said he would encourage the Rotary to begin fundraising; Council members expressed concern about directly contributing additional funds to the Rotary while the city already supports the Minnetonka Yacht Club fireworks event. Tom Erdmann moved that the City not support additional payments from the Excelsior Fire District to the Rotary Club. The motion carried 5–0.
No additional funding was authorized at the May 4 meeting; staff will communicate the Council’s decision to the Excelsior Fire District and Rotary.
