Council approves beach patrol hires, expands possible Sandy Beach coverage and raises lifeguard wage

City Administrator Dan Madsen presented the proposed 2026 Beach Patrol roster and operational plan on May 4. The plan included expanded coverage at Robinsons Bay, potential administrative extension of lifeguard operations to Sandy Beach dependent on budget and staffing, and wage adjustments for the season.
The Council authorized staff to hire the listed lifeguards and to hire additional lifeguards as needed during the season. Councilmember Tony Jewett moved to amend the motion to set Makayla Kryck’s hourly wage to $27; the amendment was accepted and the motion carried 5–0. Council also authorized staff to administratively extend operations to Sandy Beach and to fund related equipment and wages from the 2026 budget contingency if necessary.
The action permits the department to begin staffing for summer beach operations and gives staff conditional authority to expand coverage based on budget performance and staffing availability.
