A committee member reported the Marketing Communications Committee has commissioned 40 banners to mark Merrill’s 250th anniversary and plans a decorating contest for residents and businesses.
“We have ordered 40 banners, and they'll be placed in strategic places, 4 different banners,” a committee member said, describing four designs and locations such as city entrances and roundabouts. The member said the banners will focus on the city’s 250th and will not carry business names; donor names will be published but contribution amounts will not.
Hallie described a parallel plan to install red, white and blue flower displays and to run a decorating contest resembling a tour-of-homes format. Residents will be able to vote via a Facebook form and at official locations (the expo center and the library); winners will be announced at the Labor Day car show at the fairgrounds.
Committee members discussed timing and vendor selection. The banners will be displayed for roughly two to three months, and the committee said it used a different vendor (at approximately half the price of the previous supplier) to reduce costs. Members also agreed to remove existing sponsor banners that have completed their cycle and to solicit donations for the anniversary program.
No formal vote on the banner purchase was recorded in the meeting transcript; the report was provided as an update and committee members asked staff to proceed with outreach to businesses for donations and to finalize contest mechanics.
