Eden Valley–Watkins board advances three candidates to second-round superintendent interviews

The Eden Valley–Watkins School Board voted Saturday to invite three finalists back for second-round superintendent interviews as it narrows the field in its search for a new superintendent.
Board Chair Jay Brovold called the special meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. in the Eden Valley–Watkins Media Center. Present were Chair Jay Brovold and board members Ben Stommes, Jen Evens, Ann Lemke, Christina DeRose, Charli Magedanz and Nathan Haag, along with Business Manager Alisa Woolcott.
Barb Dorn of MSBA led the board through procedures for conducting first-round interviews and provided interview question packets and guidance on note-taking and assessment recording. The board conducted five scheduled interviews beginning at 10:15 a.m. and concluding at approximately 4:45 p.m.
Candidates interviewed were Trish Perry (Superintendent, Foley), Jason Michels (Secondary Principal, Litchfield), Jason Mielke (Secondary Principal, Albany), Joel Baumgarten (Superintendent, BLHS) and Judd Wheatley (Secondary Principal, MCCRAY). After interviews, Barb Dorn collected the assessment forms the board members submitted and the board reviewed feedback from staff members who attended.
On a motion made by Ben Stommes and seconded by Ann Lemke, the board voted to extend offers for second-round interviews to Joel Baumgarten, Jason Mielke and Trish Perry; the motion carried unanimously. Barb Dorn will contact those candidates with details for the Feb. 5 interviews and will provide the finalized schedule; a news release will be sent to Tracey to post on the district website.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:22 p.m. on a motion by Christina DeRose, seconded by Charli Magedanz. No formal vote tallies beyond the recorded motions were provided in the minutes.
