Resident urges removal of unsafe boulevard tree; council warns neighbor to clean property

During open forum at the Aug. 12 meeting, resident Rita Riggs told the Echo City Council that a boulevard tree in front of her house is in poor condition and that two or three trees on the block may need removal for safety. Councilman Darren Gjerset moved and Councilman Mark Schettler seconded a motion to hire the same tree service that removed trees in the park to remove the identified trees; the motion carried with Councilmen Larsen and Hanson absent.
Gayle Pederson also raised concerns about the condition of a neighboring property. According to the clerk’s account, the city has sent the owners letters and will issue a final notice requiring cleanup or initiate legal action if the property is not brought into compliance.
The council did not debate the matter at length; the recorded action sends the tree-removal work to the city’s contractor and advances enforcement steps on the nuisance property.
