The Mount Vernon City Council on April 6 adopted Resolution #4-6-2026A to amend the city’s revenue purpose statement for electric and natural gas franchise fees, allowing the fees to be used for public safety purchases such as vehicles, buildings and equipment.
Mayor Thomas M. Wieseler opened a public hearing at 6:32 p.m. on the proposed change and, after hearing no public comment, closed the hearing. Council member Tuerler moved to adopt the resolution; Engel seconded and the measure passed on a roll-call vote with all members voting yes.
City staff told the council the change would allow the city to buy vehicles for public safety without placing additional strain on the general fund. Council members offered no public objections during the hearing.
The resolution takes effect according to city procedures; staff did not specify an implementation date at the meeting. The council’s action follows routine review of the franchise-fee revenue purpose language to ensure allowed uses align with current needs and budget planning.
