Calvin, representing the Friends of the Council on Aging, updated the board on recent Friends activities and fundraising and urged a more proactive approach to programming and outreach.
"We're proactive rather than just a reactive body," Calvin said as he described the Friends’ sponsorship of Curious Creatures (planned for June) and support for a recurring music event next summer (referred to as the Memory Laners). He said the Friends are finalizing a tribute wall for major donors (criteria defined as gifts or in‑kind value of $500 or more) and are working on a Noble Fund outreach and periodic donor checks.
Calvin also recapped the senior chat (second Tuesday) and said Wendy Joseph would be a guest for a future session. Board members praised the Friends’ work and volunteered to help publicize events.
Discussion shifted to volunteer recruitment and marketing. Board members proposed open houses, volunteer days, coordinated outreach at the Y and other neighborhood organizations, and using existing newsletter, Facebook and mayor’s office graphics to promote the center. Several board members volunteered to create flyers and a marketing plan; Lisa and staff offered to assemble materials and adapt a prior colorful flyer into a volunteer recruitment piece. The group suggested timing outreach around a second‑floor ribbon cutting to create buzz.
Calvin said the Friends will continue to support events and help with logistics such as gift‑card donations for bingo and raffles. The group also noted the Friends’ nomination process and the upcoming May election of officers under the updated bylaws (two‑year terms).
