Shelby schedules Feb. 7 hearing to set maximum property tax levy

The Shelby City Council voted unanimously on Jan. 17 to schedule a public hearing for Feb. 7 to set the city’s maximum property tax levy. The motion to order the hearing was made by Councilmember Chris Evans and seconded by Councilmember Karen Schlueter; the roll call recorded all ayes and the motion carried.
The hearing was placed on the calendar as a formal step in the annual levy-certification process. Mayor Ron Kroll asked whether any conflicts of interest existed; none were declared, and the council moved forward with the agenda and the hearing order.
The council did not discuss levy figures at the Jan. 17 meeting; the Feb. 7 hearing will provide the public an opportunity to review any proposed levy rate and offer comment. The council’s action at this meeting was procedural: to set the hearing date, not to adopt a tax rate.
The meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
