Animal advocacy group asks Shelby council to consider case-by-case approach to breed labeling

Padfoot Ponderosa LLC, an animal advocacy organization, urged the Shelby City Council on Feb. 21 to consider amending the city's animal ordinance so animals would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis rather than by broad breed labels.
A Padfoot Ponderosa representative told the council the group works with responsible pet owners to keep animals out of shelters and said that animals leaving shelters are often mislabeled by breed, which the group said contributes to stigma against pit-bull–type dogs. The group asked the council to consider changing the ordinance to allow individualized determinations.
Councilmembers heard the request but did not take immediate action; no ordinance amendment was introduced at the meeting. The council did not vote on any ordinance change during the session.
